"Golden evening. Golden kiss," April came home humming. She was surprised to see that her mother's vehicle was already there. Joan rarely came home early and certainly not before her.

When she entered the house her mother was sitting in the living room with a relaxed look on her face. Beside her was an old-looking guy who had a receding hairline and gray whiskers.

April immediately disliked him. He was gazing at her like she imagined a reptile would.

"Oh April." Her mother had on her best motherly tone, a tone that April distrusted. "This is Cameron Dakers."

April approached him reluctantly. "Hi."

"Hello April. It is lovely to meet you."

April didn't respond.

Her mother filled in the awkward silence, "April, Cameron and I are going to a musical in Negril at one of the hotels."

"So where is the other guy, the one you were dating last week?" April asked innocently. "The one that looked like Dad, he was more your age. My Dad is handsome and young." She said to Cameron spitefully.

"April," Joan gasped. "Excuse me a second Cameron."

She got up with a stormy look in her eye.

April got up too.

"Should I call you Mr. Dakers or Grandpa Cameron? You look old enough to be my grandpa."

Joan dragged her from the hall.

"Listen to me," she whispered furiously as soon as they were in April's room, and out of earshot, "how dare you act like a brat in front of Cameron?"

"I don't like him." April said petulantly.

"Fine," Joan said exasperatedly. "You are a child of divorce and nobody can meet up to your precious father in your eyes, but I expect you to be polite to whomever I bring in this house. Understand?"

April shrugged.

Joan sighed. "A shrug is not a response. Why are you acting like this? You are sixteen years old. Surely you are old enough to stop acting like a brat."

"I don't like him," April said putting down her bag in the corner. "I hate something about him. He makes me feel uneasy."

"He's a nice guy, very pleasant to be around and doesn't mind that I'm a divorcee. He's not old," Joan said defensively. "He's in his forties. Only a teenager would find that age old. He is responsible, he owns a chain of restaurants, and he's recently divorced."

"Why? I bet his wife couldn't stand it when he looked at her."

"Enough. I am going to bathe and get ready for this musical."

"I hope I never see old shifty eyes again." April sat on the bed and took off her shoes.

"So this is what the rebellious teenage years are like? I don't like it," Joan exhaled noisily.

"You can always send me back to live with my Dad," April scowled.

"I just might do that." Joan went outside and closed the door.
